Frequently asked questions

This depends on several factors, but in general patients will see a reduction in itching within 2 weeks. However, the full effect of any medication for an itchy and flaky scalp can take up to 2 months so we encourage you to continue using these products for that long in order to judge their effectiveness.

Allura medicinals uses a combination of anti-yeast and anti-inflammatory medications in our shampoo and scalp serums. As you can read about here, an itchy and flaky scalp is caused by overgrowth of yeast on the scalp followed by an inflammatory reaction to the yeast. We attack this from both angles at the same time, which is different from any commercially available prescription or over the counter medication.

Because there is no way to permanently cure an itchy and flaky scalp you will need to continue to use these medications on a regular basis to keep the problem under control. It is possible that the condition will eventually go away (sometimes when people move to a different area this can happen), but we will not be able to predict when, or if, that will occur.

As you can read about here, seborrheic dermatitis (the technical term for an itchy and flaky scalp) is not curable. The yeast that causes this condition is found on the skin normally and is present everywhere in the world. So, even if it was eliminated from the body it will come back within a couple of weeks. Therefore we need to find medications that are safe and sustainable to use. Our products are formulated to be effective as quickly as possible, but also balanced to be safe to use on a long term basis. Our shampoo contains a very strong topical steroid, but as the contact time is just a few minutes, and used 2-3 times a week, the likelihood of side effects is very low. Conversely, we use a milder topical steroid in the scalp serum as the contact time is much longer. The combination of the two results in fast and sustainable results that are safe to use long term. If topical steroids are not for you though, stay tuned as we are developing other alternatives that we hope to offer soon!

We designed Allura to be both the most effective and the easiest way to get control of your itchy and flaky scalp. While we do not accept insurance we think our value still exceeds that of seeing an in person dermatologist. Check out the handy chart we put together to see how we save you time and money. In addition to not having to wait weeks or months to see a dermatologist, you save on your co-pay, prescription medication co-pays, and don’t have to take the time out of your busy schedule to drive to an office and wait to be seen
